10 - Exploring Toledo - Another World Heritage Site
.
Toledo is my friend Sue's favorite city in Spain. We have been totally charmed by the confluence of Moorish, Jewish and Christian styles. Our hotel rooms have this little "casba" feel to them and as we walk outside our back door, a raised pool with pillows sit all around.
As promised, we have lots of rain today. In part that made us run to see as much as possible yesterday so we could enjoy the views. We took a little trolly train which allowed us to hit all the highlights. My advice to anyone who follows ( only sit on the right side of the trolly, no cameras needed on the left....bummer)
The Cathedral was just totally fabulous. The ceilings were 45 meters high ( 120 ft). Gold, Gold and more Gold. Leischen would say that every little hamlet across the North of Spain had a huge Cathedral , but this one is suppose to be noteworthy. When I looked at the arched butresses, I was thankful for the pages and pages Ken Follett spent in explaining their importance. It was like looking at Pillars of the Earth and not just reading it.
Toledo is one of the Spanish cities with the greatest wealth of monuments. Known as the “city of the three cultures”, because Christians, Arabs and Jews lived together there for centuries, behind its walls Toledo preserves an artistic and cultural legacy in the form of churches, palaces, fortresses, mosques and synagogues. This great diversity of artistic styles makes the old quarter of the capital of Castile - La Mancha a real open-air museum, which has led to it being declared a World Heritage Site
